Chapter 4: An Overview of the Windows Server Family

Overview

So far, we have presented an overview of the Microsoft server families. In this chapter, we will have a look under the hood of Windows. We will show you some of the architecture and how you can scale it, using the techniques described earlier. You will also learn how to secure your servers.

We will not include many practical examples; rather, we will focus on the plumbing so that you can decide from this which features you want to explore further and implement. Since Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 are so similar, we will not separate them in this discussion. We will, however, take a look at the small things that have been changed between the two versions of Microsoft's server families.

Let's begin by looking at the architecture of a Windows Server system.
