Summary

Both IIS 5.0 and IIS 6.0 offer great possibilities to help you build a scalable and secure Web site with high performance. When it comes to choosing the correct platform to build your applications and Web sites on, we hope this has been a help. We should argue heavily in favor of the use of Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0 with ASP.NET. But unfortunately, it is not always up to us to decide. As we see it, though, with the stability of Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0, combined with the scalability and performance boost they both offer, there really is no choice when deciding which platform to use for your new applications. Hopefully, after reading this book you will agree, and have good arguments for this approach so you can implement it in your company.

In Chapter 9, we will compare the same .NET application running on Windows 2000 with IIS 5.0 and on Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0. The difference in performance will hopefully be of help when convincing a decision maker to taking the next step forward to the .NET platform.

But no matter which platform you use, there are similar rules of thumb to follow:

If you follow the guidelines presented here, you can build the best solution on the hardware and software platform you have chosen.
